Anantnag: A Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed on Monday during a brief exchange of fire between government forces and militants in Seer village of Tral in Pulwama.
The slain militant has been identified as Adil Ahmad Chopan, a resident of Laraw Jageer village in Tral.
Chopan had survived this year’s May 20 encounter in which the top Hizb commander and Burhan Wani associate, Sabzar Ahmad Bhat, was killed. He was pulled out of the debris of the house razed to ground during the gunfight in Saimoh village of Tral.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG), South Kashmir, S P Pani confirmed the killing of a militant saying, “A Hizbul terrorist has been killed in Tral gunfight.”
According to the police, Chopan Mohalla locality of Seer village was cordoned off on Monday afternoon following inputs about the presence of militants there.
“The militants were holed up in a residential house. While the cordon was being laid they resorted to intense firing in a bid to escape,” a senior police official from the area told Kashmir Reader.
He said that the fire was retaliated in which a militant was killed, who was later identified as Adil Chopan.
Sources in the police said that the other militants accompanying Chopan carried him for half a kilometre in an injured condition before abandoning his body soon after he died.
“The body is yet to be handed over to the family. It will be done after the medico-legal formalities are completed,” the sources said.
Government forces meanwhile have tightened the cordon, and an intense combing operation is underway to try and track the other militants.
