Ganderba: The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh highway remained closed for the second consecutive day Saturday, due to snowfall at Zojilla pass and Drass.
No vehicle was allowed from either side for the second day today, a traffic police official said.
He said the road had become slippery because of below freezing temperature and continues snowfall particularly between Sonamarg-Zojila and Drass.
Therefore, he said, traffic was suspended as a precautionary measure to avoid any accident.
DySp Traffic Ganderbal Liyaqat Qadri told Kashmir Reader that the decision to allow traffic on the highway will be taken only after a green signal is received from BRO.
Captain BRO Niraj Kumar Singh told Kashmir Reader that the efforts were on to put through the highway, connecting the Ladakh region with rest of the state.
Niraj Said they had cleared the snow from the road up to Zero point of the Zojila area yesterday afternoon but fresh snow has accumulated on the highway.
“We have started the snow clearance operation again to clear the road and hopefully we will make it motorable soon.” he said.
Sources said that a large number of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, are stranded on both sides of the Zojila pass, which witnessed snowfall during the past 24 hours.
