Hizb OGW arrested in Kulgam: police
Anantnag: A policeman was shot at and grievously injured by suspected militants in main town Anantnag, Thursday afternoon.
The injured policeman has been identified as Ranbir Singh alias Tony, son of Subedar Singh, a resident of Singhpora village in Aishmuqam village of Anantnag district.
Tony was entrusted with managing traffic outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in the busy Lal Chowk area of Anantnag town.
“That is where he was shot at by the militants,” a senior police official from Anantnag told Kashmir Reader.
The incident took place at about 1:30 pm Thursday afternoon. Panic gripped the whole area as gunshots reverberated and people ran for cover.
“He was shot in the abdomen,” the police official said, adding that Tony was getting treatment at the army’s Base Hospital in Srinagar. “He is stable,” the official said.
The police ruled out the weapon-snatching angle in the shootout.
“He did not carry any weapons. He simply regulated traffic at the point,” the official said.
Following the shootout, huge contingents of government forces reached the spot, and the area was cordoned off to try and nab the attackers.
The attackers however had fled after carrying out the shootout.
Meanwhile an alleged Over Ground Worker (OGW) of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) has been arrested in Kulgam from an undisclosed location.
The OGW, Showket Ahmad Lone of Chersoo Awantipora in Pulwama district, was apprehended with a pistol and four rounds, as per the police.
“He was tasked by Hizb commander Riyaz Naikoo to attack the security forces and try to snatch weapons. He was arrested following a tip-off from our ground sources,” a senior police official said.
He said that a case has been registered and investigation has been taken up in the matter.
