SRINAGAR: A one day seminar titled ‘Geography: Problems and Prospects in Changing Global context’ was organised by the Department of Geography & Regional Development, University of Kashmir on Saturday.
An official statement issued here said the seminar was a very significant event and attained an extra importance as it was organised in honour of a revered teacher of the department Prof Tasawoor A Kanth, who attained superannuation this month.
“Prof Kanth’s outstanding and exemplary role as a model teacher, philosopher and guide was highlighted by his colleagues, friends and students,” the statement said. “The highlight of this event was the august presence of some leading geographers of the country who have carved a niche for themselves in the academic world.”
Eminent geographers like Prof Majid Husain, Prof Rais Akhtar, Prof Gurbaksh Singh, Prof Bupinder Zutshi and Prof Mondira Dutta graced the occasion. They all had served the department and had been Prof Kanth’s colleagues at different points of time. “This event provided an opportunity for the respected alumni of the department to assemble on one platform and cherish their association with the alma mater.”
The pass out students of the department since its inception in 1979 marked their presence and made the occasion momentous. The almuni included Humayun Qaiser (Director, Radio Kashmir, Srinagar), Mukhtair Ahmad (Acclaimed Photographer), Mushtaq Ahmad Khan and Ayash Arif (Television Personalities), Farooq Ahmad (Chief Editor-Brighter Kashmir), G M Rather and Ali Mohd Reshi (J&K Police), Dr GM Dar (IMPA), Prof Mushtaq Ahmad Wani (Rtd Principal), Prof BA Mir (Principal, GDC, Pulwama), Prof Mehraj-ud-din Sheikh, Prof AR Bhat and Prof Anjum Qazi (SP College), Prof Razia Bashir and Prof M Amin Sheikh (A S College), Prof Fouzia Fatima (Govt Women’s College, MA Road) and Peerzada Mumtaz Ahmad (KAS).
The seminar had been divided into four sessions: the inaugural function, the plenary session, the alumni session and the felicitation ceremony.
Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof Khursheed Andrabi presided over the inaugural function and highlighted the importance of teachers to act as role models for their students. The guests presented their views on the theme of the seminar during the plenary session.
Prof M. Sultan Bhat, Dean, School of Earth & Environmental & Head, Department of Geography made a brief presentation of the Department and highlighted its achievements and appraised the gathering about the future plans. The alumni of the department expressed their views, opinions and experiences. They talked about their emotional attachment with the department and lauded the role of their teachers especially Prof Tasawoor A Kanth in shaping their careers. The last session was felicitation ceremony in which the invited geographers were formally felicitated for their contribution to the development of this department. The last part of this session was felicitation of Prof Tasawoor A Kanth, where emotional scenes were witnessed as colleagues, friends and students bade him farewell on his superannuation and wished him healthy and prosperous life.
