Police gives cash assistance to Sopore youth mistaken as braid chopper

Sopore: Police in Sopore Monday handed over an amount of Rs 25,000 to the Sopore youth, who was assaulted by a mob at Mazbug, Sopore after mistaking him for a braid chopper.
They said the sum was collected from donations by police officers Sopore and handed over to victim’s father to help in his treatment.
On October 20, a mob frenzied by braid-chopping rumours attempted to set Waseem Ahmad Tantray, a mentally challenged man on fire at the outskirts of Sopore.
The mob thrashed Tantray mercilessly and then paraded him to Fruit Mandi, Sopore. A viral video shared on social media shows the mob trying to set him on fire in the fields.
Police intervened to save the man from the mob. Later 19 people were arrested for the assault.
