Kashmir issue alive: NC

Srinagar: Categorically stating that Kashmir issue will exist till it is not solved politically, the National Conference (NC) on Sunday questioned the role and appointed of an interlocutor in Kashmir at a time when BJP leaders claim that Kashmir issue is settled.

The National Conference also called for restoration of autonomy. The party sought chief minister Mehbooba Mufti to explain if even one Burhan Wani was born out of mistakes committed by the National Conference led government and see how many “Burhan Wanis and Zakir Musas” were born in last three years.

“Kashmir issue is there, and it will remain there till its political solution is found,” former chief minister and NC working President, Omar Abdullah, said during the party delegates’ convention here.

Referring to the role of the recently appointed interlocutor, Dineshwar Sharma, Omar questioned the government for not explaining his role and mandate.

“Why is he coming here? What is his purpose? When they are against the internal autonomy, what does the government means by holding talks with the people,” Omar asked. “The Minister of the State (MOS) in the Prime Minister Office says there is no Kashmir issue. So what will Dinesh Sharma talk about? Do not deceive us”.

Omar explained the MOS had said that the interlocutor would not talk to Hurriyat and many such voices were emerging from within the BJP. “I am sure Shamra will be confused as to who he would be talking to. He might be confused about his own role. This will not work. The controversial statements should end. Please put a silencer on the mouth of your (BJP) leaders,” Omar said.

Omar said Kashmiris were going through a grind due to the gun for the past 27 years. “The situation in south Kashmir is such, they are not able to convene elections,” he said.

He said finally the Indian Prime Minister had realized, as he announced from the ramparts of Red fort, that Kashmir solution can’t be found by hurling abuses or firing bullets. It will be solved by embracing Kashmiris, he said.

“We were waiting for this announcement for the past three and half years,” Omar said. “I think the ministers and some cabinet members of Prime Minister have not listened to his speech. They seem to have slept at that time. They targeted the former home minister P Chidambaram when he said Hurriyat was not asking for Azaadi, but they actually want to talk about autonomy.”

We are not demanding autonomy from Pakistan or Russia, we demand it from the Indian constitution. It is already there.”

Omar reiterated that Kashmiris had acceded to the Indian union and not merged. “We have preserved our identity, our flag and our own constitution. You can’t compare us with other Indian states.”

On volatile situation in Kashmir, Omar claimed that NC handed over the rule to the PDP-BJP government when situation in Kashmir was normal. “This dispensation has ruined Kashmir. It has brought devastation. People who voted in 2014 are repenting their decision. Remember, we have to pay the price for this PDP-BJP rule in the future.”

NC working president said that during his tenure, youth would be trained as policeman, but now they prefer to become a militant. “I remember when Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said Burhan Wani was born out of the mistakes committed by NC dispensation. Yes, I take this responsblity,” Omar said. “Can she tell me how many Burhan Wanis and Zakir Musas have been born in last three years?”

During the 2016 unrest, he said that not a single NC worker or leader demanded the resignation of chief minister. “When I was going through similar situation, you (Mehbooba Mufti) and your father (Mufti Mohammad Sayeed) knocked every door in Delhi trying to convince them that the situation will improve if I am removed.”

He said he was sure that chief minister will be repenting her statements made against NC government.

“You realize the gravity of problem when you sit on the chair. In last one and the half year, your government has killed people, used deadly pellet guns, pava shells, first time in last 16 years locked mosques, and had not allowed eid congregational prayers,” Omar said.

In his address NC president Farooq Abdullah also said that Kashmir issue is political.

“Till it is not resolved, it will continue to be there,” he stated.

Speaking about the recent NIA raids in relation with hawala money transactions, Abdullah said, “We were told that things in Kashmir are being carried with the help of Pakistani money. You picked people, if they are with you, tell us what happened to the money trail. You picked up Salahudins son and his grandson”.

“If you are investigating about Pakistani money, also investigate about the Indian money. Who are the people you gave bags loaded with money to root out the NC in Kashmir”.

He also said that youths from Kupwara and other places were being taken to Delhi and then to Nagpur, to change their mindset.

“You have to remain alert. They have become agents of RSS in our ranks,” Abdullah said

He said that NC will protect the rights of the people by means of restoring the autonomy.

“We will work towards making the autnomy law, if we come to power. We will hold discussions soon in Jammu in the regard,” Abdullah said.

Abdullah further said, former goverenor Jagmohan was responsible for the exodus of Kashmiri pandits from Kashmir. He had promised he will bring them back after three months, but three decades have passed since.

“Truth will prevail, Jagmohan has to answer before God, Bagwaan, Wah-e-Guru and Allah,”Abdullah prayed.
