Srinagar: A Special Operations Group (SOG) personal of Jammu and Kashmir Police was killed and another injured in a gunfight in Hajin town of Bandipora district on Sunday morning.
The two were hit by bullets after forces cordoned of Mir Mohallah area of Hajin early over intelligence input about presence of militants in the area.
As the forces zeroed in, reports said, they were fired upon by militants that left two SOG men injured.
The injured SOG personnel were shifted to hospital in critical condition. One of them succumbed to his injuries and another is in critical condition, a police official said. The slain cop has been identified as Zaheer Ahmad.
The firing has stopped at the encounter site but the cordon remains intact, a police official told Kashmir Reader. We haven’t retrieved body of any militant yet from the encounter and the operation is still going on, he added.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted between local civilians and the forces following the allegations that later ransacked the property of the locals.
“People have started pelting stones on the forces and in retaliation teargas shells are being fired to disperse the protesting people,” a local said.
Heavy clashes were going on between the forces and civilians at the time this report was being filled.
Unconfirmed reports also said that two militants have been killed in the gunfight.
