Vintage cars to feature in first exhibition in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: As many as 20 vintage cars are expected to be rolled out at the first of its kind car exhibition in Kashmir this weekend.
The event, branded Big Evolution – An Exclusive Exhibition of Cars Through Time, will showcase an elaborate range of cars – 1930’s vintage, to modern cars, off-roaders and sports, besides vintage bikes, scooters and recreational vehicles.
The main attraction of the event will be the cars restored by an avid car collector and renovator of Kashmir, Ashfaq Mujeeb aka Adam. He has restored over 30 cars so far including a 1950s DeSoto, gifted to Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah by the then Dogra ruler of J&K, Hari Singh.
“It’s a historical car and I am lucky to get it from somebody close to Sheikh Sahib’s family. It was dream-come-true for me to have this car. I am in a process of restoring it. Hopefully, we will display it if the restoration process finishes on time,” Adam told Kashmir Reader.
Besides the DeSoto, Adam has restored cars like 1946 Chevrolet Fleet Master, 1966 Chevrolet Impala, 1950s Fiat and 1951 Mercedes. All of them will be a part of the exhibition.
Adam said, “Chevrolet Impala is also close to my heart as it was gifted to me by a renowned medical practitioner Dr Zahoor after (he was) impressed by my love for cars. He had purchased this (car) when he was Director SKIMS. He has cared for it like a child.”
I am also in a process to restore 1936 Austin which was damaged due to floods.”
Among other cars on display will be Toyoto Corona, 1970s Jonga, and vintage Morris, Beetel, BMW, Range Rover and Audi cars. Apart from this, several two-wheelers will also be on display.
“All the cars were collected from Jammu and Kashmir and restored for the event with an aim to set-up a show to celebrate the entire car community,” said Ali Sajid, the organizer.
The exhibition will be organized by Kashmir Off Road group in collaboration with 92.7 BigFM and Department of Tourism, J&K. Sajid said that after car exhibition in Srinagar, the plan is to expand the event to other parts of J&K starting with a car rally of vintage and classic cars.
“We are delighted to proclaim our third major event of this year. If you are a car enthusiast or share a passion for the cars or simply someone who wants to travel back in time – this event is for you,” he said.
