Baramulla: Two sisters from Handwara who were reported missing on Tuesday have been recovered by police in Ramban last night.
Police said the two had not been kidnapped, as alleged, but had fled home to meet a boy friend in Jammu.
Giving details at a press conference, SSP Handwara Gulam Jeelani Wani said that they had developed an affair with a Jammu boy on phone and both were going to meet the boy.
Wani said that soon after police posted their photographs on social media, a jeweler approached police and informed them that both the girls had come to his shop and sold some ornaments against a cash payment of Rs 5000.
He said that they got some leads that the girls had boarded for Jammu and hence informed all the police stations enroute. Hailing the efforts of SDPO Ramban Imtiyaz Ahmad, Wani said said that police in Ramban spotted the girls at around 11.30pm took them into the custody.
Both the girls are on way back to Handwara and would be handed over to parents this evening, he said. The two had been using their mother’s phone to speak to their boyfriend, he said. Before police cracked the case, people in Hnadwara suspected that the two had been kidnapped by some people were planning to hold protests.
However, due to the cooperation from family and other citizens, the police said, it successfully solved the case within eight hours.
