If the public mood can be gauged in Kashmir contemporarily against the back drop of the serial braid chopping incidents, then it would appear that the public anger has kind of plateaued after peaking. This is not to say all is well and hunky and dory in Kashmir. Plateauing of anger means that it can go anywhere. Despite or inspite of this condition, no headway , at all, has been made regarding who is actually behind these incidents. The theory of “hysteria” touted by the police flies flat against the reality of incidents that have actually occurred and happened. Furthermore, if the police believes that it is mere hysteria, why have they announced a cash reward for information about braid choppers? Complementing the mystery is that the void created by the inability of the administration to make any head way into the whole saga has been filled by people. In some senses , this accrues from fear and insecurity that has descended over Kashmir but , by and large, in many or most instances, the people who have borne the brunt of mob fury have turned out to be innocent people. The response to this by the police is to arrest and slap harsh charges against those deemed or held to be part of mob fury. This approach is a post facto one which actually does nothing to get to the root of the issue and solve it. There are an n number of gaps and issues with the overall approach adopted to deal with the braid chopping mystery. In the ultimate analysis, the real sufferers of the saga are the people of Kashmir who are in the grips of deep fear, anxiety and insecurity. While the furore that has attended the braid chopping mystery might or might not fizzle out at some point in time, but the psychical and psychological implications and consequences might be longer lasting. As of now, Kashmir has morphed into a suspicious, fearful place and this might affect the social capital of our society, both in the short and the long term. At this delicate point in Kashmir’s history where the braid chopping saga is another factor that has panned out, it is vitally important that we, as a society, take recourse to prudence, sobriety and a sense of proportion for our own sake. We owe it ourselves and the overall health of our society and even progeny , over whom uncertainty hovers over as starkly and poignantly as ever.
