Bijbehara: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a tea seller from Uttar Pradesh here in Arwini village near Bijbehara on Sunday evening.
The slain has been identified as Shakir Ahmad. A resident of Uttar Pradesh, Shakir had rented a shop in Arwini, where he sold tea and snacks. He lived in the village along with his family.
Local sources told Kashmir Reader that Shakir was shot dead near his shop.
SSP Anantnag Altaf Khan said a police team was on its way to the village.
“Our party is on the way to the place. We will ascertain the facts and media will be briefed accordingly,” he said.
The killing has come days after posters were circulated in south Kashmir asking non-locals to leave the valley before October 25. The posters were issued by a little known militant organisation.
The police had called the posters fake, saying that efforts were being made to vitiate the atmosphere in Kashmir.
“Some anti-social elements are trying to create fear psychosis among the people. We have investigated the matter and the posters appeared in south Kashmir areas are fake. People are requested to not pay heed to such kind of rumours,” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Munir Khan told a local news agency on October 17.
