Handwara: A non-local militant was killed in a brief encounter with government forces in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Sunday morning. Official reports said that army’s 9 Para, SOG of JK Police, and other forces cordoned off Hajin locality of Handwara in the wee hours of Sunday. Militants hiding in the area, believed to be two in number, fired at the forces and the fire was retaliated, according to police. In the brief exchange of gunfire, a non-local militant was killed. Searches for his associate continue.
Police said that an AK 47 rifle and some ammunition was recovered from the possession of the slain militant. Handwara Superintendent of Police (SP) Gulam Jeelani Wani confirmed the death of a militant and said the search operation is continuing around the area. “Yes, one militant has been killed and he looks like a foreign militant. A search operation to trace the other one is continuing around the area. You can find further details from our police press note,” Wani said.
