SRINAGAR: The joint resistance leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik has called for a complete shutdown today.
A statement issued here said in a joint meeting of JRL held at Hyderpora on Thursday evening, it was decided to call shutdown and civil curfew on Saturday.
The leadership has urged traders, transporters and people to suspend their routine activities, saying that “as an oppressed nation, we are left with no other option (but) to take these tough and painful decision(s)”.
The leaders discussed various issues including unabated incidents of braid chopping and attempts to tamper with the state subject laws, the statement said.
“The meeting while taking serious notice of continuous bloodshed, lawlessness and arbitrary measures inflicted on people by forces and puppet regime, (has called) for complete shutdown on Saturday against (the) unending incidents of braid chopping,” it said.
Terming the Kupwara and Pahalgam incidents as eye-opener, the joint leadership said the assault on women is a “ploy hatched by forces men”, adding that well trained sleuths are involved in this devilish game.
Lashing out at authorities, the leadership said the assault on modesty and dignity of women is intolerable and that the “criminal silence and incompetence” of police is encouraging these unscrupulous elements to carry their immoral activities.
“The attacks on women attacks are now becoming more alarming and dangerous as even male members of families are being attacked by these criminals. If not halted immediately, it will take an ugly turn and may consume more human lives,” the leaders warned.
They said police is very swift in arresting the “wanted” persons and catch hold of “innocent” Kashmiris from Jammu and outside states. “These braid choppers are carrying their devilish game under their (police’s) nose,” they said.
Reiterating their appeal, the leadership asked people to handover those suspected of braid chopping to trustworthy persons or local Masjid committees for onward action and in no case should punish them.
