PAMPORE: Three persons, among them a mentally challenged youth, were beaten up and paraded in Khankahbagh neighbourhood here on Monday amid sloganeering after villagers caught hold of them, accusing them of ‘braid chopping’.
The alarm proved to be a hoax as nine of them was found involved in any such incident. The mentally challenged youth was roaming in the area while the other two there for work.
Eyewitnesses said that people raised slogans, claiming they had caught a ‘braid chopper’ and began pulling him and beating him. “Soon, two persons who were travelling in a private vehicle (Scorpio) stopped and tried telling the mob that they the person they were beating was mentally challenged. They said they knew the person,” said an eyewitnesses, adding that people became furious and started to beat them too. “They even damaged their vehicle.”
The three were beaten ruthlessly before police reached the spot and rescued them, eyewitnesses said.
The disabled youth was identified as 30-year-old Manzoor Ahmad Chopan, son of Abdul Sattar, resident of Boru village in Chadoora aea of Budgam district. DySP Operations Pampore, Riyaz Ahmad said that one among the other two persons is from Bemina area of Srinagar and the other from Surasyar Chadoora in Budgam.
“But the locals mistook all the three as braid choppers, and caught hold of them and thrashed them,” he said. Police added that no hair-cutting tools were found in their possession and no hair chopping incident took place in the area.
“People are requested not to resort to vigilantism and cooperate with police,” a police officer at the Pampore police station said. Meanwhile, police said that they handed over the arrested persons to their families in presence of elders from Pampore.
