SRINAGAR: Police arrested and raided residences of several resistance leaders including Hurriyat Conference spokesperson Ghulam Ahmad Gulzar, a statement issued by the conglomerate said on Friday.
“Hakim Abul Rashid and Mohammad Ashraf Laya were arrested on Thursday and lodged in police stations,” the statement said.
Chairman Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Geelani while condemning the detention and alleged nocturnal raids on residences of resistance leaders said it is “extremely unwise” to deny political space and muzzle genuine voices.
He blamed authorities for creating chaos in the state, saying, “On one hand, humiliating and shameful activities against women folk are being sponsored by secret agencies and on the other, forces and police are unleashing brutalities on peaceful protestors.”
“Ghulam Ahmad Gulzar is a well known political leader. (The) night raids are unbearable and unacceptable,” Geelani said and denounced the arrest of Hakim Abdul Rashid and Mohammad Ashraf Laya, saying, “Despite detentions, arbitrary measures and harassment, the freedom mission will be carried to its logical end.”
Meanwhile, Hurriyat in a statement denounced the imposing of curfew on Friday by authorities and blocking internet service, saying “it is a conspiracy to snap connectivity, deprive people from access to information and a deliberate act to provide escape route for those culprits involved in braid chopping”.
It also condemned the “excessive use of brute force” against protestors in Sambora and alleged vandalising of properties and injuring a youth in a shootout. “On one hand, the perpetrators are free to humiliate women while as those raising voice against (such) highhandedness are subjected (to) intimidations and extreme brutalities.”
Meanwhile, Geelani expressed deep grief over the demise of prominent educationist, Ateeqa Ji, and said during her tenure she rendered highest, praiseworthy and meritorious services in the field of education and Urdu literature.
The Hurriyat chairman while praying for her heavenly abode and forbearance to the grieved family said the late Ateeqa Ji was a pious lady and from a noble dynasty.
A Hurriyat delegation led by Tehreek-e-Huriyat leader, Shah Wali Mohammad visited grieved family in Sopore and extended condolences on behalf of Syed Ali Geelani.
