GMC appoints Dr Salim Khan as Chief Spokesperson
Srinagar: Government Medical College Srinagar Thursday issued a fresh advisory for officials saying there was no blanket ban on journalists to enter its associated hospitals.
Principal GMC Dr Samia Rashid also appointed Dr Salim Khan, HoD Social and Preventive Medicine as Chief Spokesperson for the College and authorized him to talk to media regarding the College affairs and issues.
In a statement issued today, the Principal said officials had misinterpreted her instructions as a blanket ban on media in the associated hospitals which was not the case.
The order was issued by Principal Government Medical College Srinagar after meeting a group of media persons to clarify a recent advisory restricting access to media personnel into operation theatres and wards during clinical rounds.
While clarifying that there was no blanket ban on entry of media, She said the instructions were issued in order to respect and ensure the privacy of patients undergoing treatment in hospitals and to prevent unrestricted access to areas like operation theatres and to areas where clinical rounds and procedures are underway.
“For accessing these areas Media Personnel will have to take proper permission from concerned medical superintendents,” she said.
The circular said that media should recognize the importance of privacy of patients and “doctors should be allowed to perform their duties without interference to ensure patient care does not suffer.”
“In order to facilitate better coordination between media and GMC Srinagar which include regular interaction/meet the press by the Principal with media fraternity? Prof (Dr) S M Salim Khan HOD Community Medicine GMC Srinagar will be the Chief Spokesperson for the purpose in case of GMC Srinagar,” the circular said.
According to the fresh instructions, Medical Superintendents of respectively associated hospitals have been designated as spokespersons of their respective hospitals.
“No other person shall talk to media personnel about the functioning and patient care Associated Hospitals Srinagar,” the order said.
