Mentally challenged non-local mistaken as braid-chopper in Sumbal

Sumbal: A young non-local resident was mistaken as a braid-chopper and thrashed by people in Sumbal area of north Kashmir before handing him over to local police.

The youth, according to Police was caught and thrashed by locals after they found him roaming around in a suspicious manner at Dangerpora village in Sumbal pocket of Bandipora district last night. A police party was rushed to the area after the locals passed on the information.

A local resident said the person was suspiciously moving around when he was intercepted by the people. “He was asked to stop but he ran away. Some youngsters chased him and caught hold of him. He was beaten to pulp,” the resident said.

Police said the person was brought to the police station Sumbal. During questioning, it was found that the said person was mentally unstable and was immediately taken to a health facility where doctor advised psychiatric treatment for him.

The police have recorded the statements of several locals who said that the non-local neither entered any house nor attempted braid-chopping.

    Has FIR been filed against the people who took the law in their own hands and beat up an innocent person?
