SHRC takes cognizance, puts govt on notice

SRINAGAR: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Tuesday took serious note of braid-chopping incidents across Kashmir and directed the State police to submit Compliance Report (CR) within two weeks.
The commission directed the inspector general of police (Kashmir range) to submit updated status report on FIR’s registered against the incidents and also file report regarding the investigation process.
While hearing a petition no.297/Sgr/2017 filed by human rights activist Ahsan Untoo on September 28, 2017 and another petition by activist MM Shuja under SHRC/301/Sgr/2017, the Chairperson SHRC retired Justice Bilal Nazki issued separate notices to IGP Kashmir, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and all district magistrates of Valley and directed them to submit compliance report with regard to braid-chopping incidents in Kashmir.
The commission observed that braid-chopping incidents are reported on daily basis and nothing much has been brought before public by the investigating agencies. It appears that these incidents are getting more ground day by day and yet the culprits are not identified.
The chairman SHRC also directed the police department to initiate a time-bound enquiry of such incidents.
The next hearing of the case has been scheduled on October 23, 2017.
