Anantnag: A head constable of JK police was shot at and killed by suspected militants during a marriage ceremony in Padgampora area of Awantipora on Monday night.
The slain cop has been identified as Ashiq Hussain, posted as the Munshi of police station Awantipora.
Kashmir’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Munir Khan, confirmed the killing.
“Yes a policeman has been killed. He was there to attend a marriage and was in civvies when the militants fired at him,” Khan told Kashmir Reader.
According to sources the incident took place at about 9:30 PM, Monday night in Padgampora village.
“Some armed men barged into the marriage function and singled Hussain out before firing multiple shots at him,” a source in the village told Kashmir Reader.
The source said that at least nine rounds were fired at Hussain, leaving him dead on spot.
The suspected militants managed to flee the spot soon after shooting Hussain dead.
Following the incident heavy contingents of police and army reached the spot and cordoned off the area.
Searches were being carried out to try and nab the attackers, while this report was being filed.
