Petition in SHRC seeks action against braid choppers

Srinagar: A fresh petition has been filed in State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to seek action against the persons behind braid chopping incidents that have occurred across Kashmir over the past couple of weeks.
The petition seeks that “the culprits should be brought to justice and SHRC should carry out an investigation through its own wing” as police had failed to nab the culprits.
“Also Inspector General of Police and Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir should take all the necessary steps to stop more such incidents and women especially young girls should be made aware accordingly,” the petition reads.
Dozens of braid chopping incidents have occurred in Kashmir, especially in southern and central districts. Kulgam appears to be the worst affected.
Meanwhile Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday announced a cash reward of Rs 3 lakh for credible information to nab the persons behind braid chopping incidents.
To speed up the investigation, Special Investigation Teams (SITs) have been constituted in every district of the valley. All district SSPs have been directed to utilize resources under their command and intensify the joint patrolling.
