Sopore: A grenade attack in main chowk Sopore on Sunday morning left a civilian, a special police officer (SPO) and a CRPF man injured. According to reports, suspected militants lobbed a grenade at government forces stationed for daily duty near the State Bank of India (SBI) branch in main chowk Sopore. A police statement said that the grenade landed inside a police bunker, but SPO Auqib Bashir Lone picked it up and threw it back out on the roadside, where it exploded.
Immediately after the attack, government forces launched a manhunt for the attackers, but they could not be found.
Authorities at Sub District Hospital Sopore told Kashmir Reader that they received three persons injured in the grenade attack, and some others with minor injuries.
The last grenade attack in Sopore, in which four policemen were injured, took place in June.
The police statement on the grenade attack is given below:
‘Grenade Attack near SBI Bank Main Chowk Sopore’
“About 09:25 am, Police Station Sopore received information through reliable sources to the effect that some unknown militants lobbed a grenade towards a BP Bunker of CRPF/Police personnel for law and order duties at Main Chowk Sopore. The assailant threw the grenade inside the BP Bunker. However, SPO Auqib Bashir Lone from inside the Bunker threw the grenade back on to the roadside where there were no civilians present. The grenade exploded, resulting injuries to one SPO, one CRPF and one civilian. If the grenade would have exploded inside the Bunker there have been much more casualties to Police/CRPF personnel and even if the grenade would have exploded in the market there have been massive civil casualties. By this act, the SPO averted the major tragedy.”
