Jammu: Ending speculation, the Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday said the killing of a Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) trooper and wounding of his colleague in Banihal on Wednesday was carried out by militants.
The militants fled with two rifles of the SSB personnel after the attack at the camp of the paramilitary force outside an 8.5 km under-construction tunnel connecting Banihal town Qazigund.
“Yesterday’s incident was a terror attack carried out by three militants at SSB camp in Banihal belt last evening,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ramban, Mohan Lal said, ending speculation about the incident which appeared mysterious initially. The militants fired at the troopers, killing one of them and injuring another, he said.
While Head Constable Ram Pravesh was killed, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Shyam Sood was injured and hospitalised in Srinagar.
“The militants also snatched two rifles of the SSB men,” Lal said, adding this was the first incident of militancy in the district over the past few years.
According to some reports, a mobile phone was recovered about one kilometre away from the incident site. A case has been registered and investigation started, the police said.
Police and other government forces have launched a combing and search operation in entire Banihal and adjoining hills to track down the attackers.
