Anantnag: A Hizbul Mujahideen militant accused of luring his neighbour, Ishtiyaq Ahmad Wagay, to Shopian on August 7, where he was shot dead by militants, was arrested late Tuesday evening from near his home in Jablipora area of Bijbehara town, police said.
The militant has been identified as Adil Bhat alias Badam, son of Ghulam Qadir Bhat.
Ishtiyaq Wagay’s bullet-riddled body was found in Bijbehara a month ago. A video recently surfaced on social media in which Ishtiyaq was seen confessing to being an informer for army and police. He was making the confession before the barrel of an AK 47 rifle pointed at his head. Police said that Ishtiyaq’s confession was a “half truth”, as he was obviously making the confession under duress.
Police said Adil was a category C militant in their records. He had been active since August 7 this year.
SSP Anantnag Altaf Khan confirmed the arrest while talking to Kashmir Reader. “Yes, we have arrested the said person and he is being questioned for now,” Khan said.
Sources told Kashmir Reader that inputs were received regarding the militant’s movement near railway tracks in Bijbehara town.
“He had either visited home or was about to, when he was nabbed,” a police source said.
He said that no recovery of weapons was made from him, so far.
“Adil had asked Ishtiyaq to accompany him to his aunt’s place in Shopian, where a marriage was due and they needed a chef (Waza). Ishtiyaq worked as a part-time Waza,” a senior police official told Kashmir Reader.
In Shopian, the police official said, Adil handed Ishtiyaq over to militants, who later killed him.
Adil did not return home after that. He, however, uploaded pictures of himself on social media, where he could be seen wearing army fatigues and carrying a gun.
The police official told Kashmir Reader that Adil’s arrest may come in handy while tracking other militants.
Meanwhile, Hizb Operational spokesman Burhan-u-Din in a tele-statement to KNS said that Adil was not associated with Hizb.
