SRINAGAR: Palestinian and Kashmiri human rights defenders came together on Friday to urge the United Nations to take a stand on the right to self-determination.
“Our case is similar to yours,” Palestinian activist Rania Madi told Altaf Hussain Wani, a senior All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leader as both shared the stage at UN building in Geneva during a panel discussion on the right to self-determination.
An APHC statement issued here said that Alfred de Zayas, a UN expert, joined the seminar and urged Kashmiri and Palestinian activists to persist in their demands “because the world will have to listen one day”.
Altaf Wani, who is leading a Kashmir delegation to the 36th session of UN Human Rights Council, welcomed UN expert’s message and urged the rights activists from Palestine and Kashmir to keep pressure on world powers and international opinion.
APHC representatives Hassan Banna and Prof Shagufta Ashraf spoke on the occasion and explained the situation in the disputed region of Jammu Kashmir from their perspectives.
