Srinagar: Kashmir Bar Association (KBA) President, Advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom, will return home “honourably” on Saturday from Delhi after being given clean chit by the National Investigation Agency, a statement by the KBA said on Friday.
Mian Qayoom, 67, attended the questioning by the NIA officials for the fourth time on Friday as a witness in the NIA’s “terror funding” case, RC-10/2017/NIA/DLI.
Qayoom was first summoned by the NIA to Delhi on September 6.
“After questioning of about six hours on the second consecutive day, the NIA gave clean chit to president KBA MA Qayoom president. He, along with his team of seven advocates, is returning home tomorrow,” said the KBA statement.
Congratulating its members, the statement added, “A word of thanks to all district and mufassil Bar associations which gave full-hearted support and showed their solidarity.”
“Mian (Qayoom) sahab was asked questions regarding the case for the whole day today,” said Nasir Qadri, among the six lawyers who accompanied Qayoom to New Delhi.
Work in Kashmir courts came to a standstill after the NIA summoned the Bar president on September 6 for two days. Lawyers demanded an “honourable” return of Qayoom as a condition to resume work.
Qayoom was asked to report back to the NIA headquarters in Delhi on September 14 and his questioning came to end on Friday.
“They found nothing against Mian Qayoom,” Qadri added. “The NIA investigators have told Mian Qayoom, ‘You can leave now. You need not to come again’,” Qadri said.
Qadri told Kashmir Reader from Delhi that Mian Qayoom entered the NIA headquarters at 10:30am today and was questioned for around 6 hours.
“Today he was given a break at 1pm for almost one hour,” Qadri said. “The investigation ended at 6:30pm.”
Qadri said the Bar president, accompanied by advocates Ajaz Bedar, Manzoor Ahmad Dar, Bashir Sidiq, Mudasir Yousuf, Mian Muzaffar and Qadri himself, will return home by Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile in Srinagar, lawyers held protests for the second consecutive day today against the NIA summons to the Bar president.
NIA spokesperson Alok Mittal said Mian Qayoom was “examined today”.
