Srinagar: President of the J&K High Court Bar Association Kashmir, Mian Adbul Qayoom, was grilled once again by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Delhi for at least seven hours on Thursday and then asked to report back on Friday.
The Bar association said that the continuous questioning of Qayoom is meant “to harass and humiliate” the Bar leadership. Lawyers boycotted work in courts across Kashmir on Thursday in protest against the NIA’s summoning of the Bar president.
“(It is) to intimidate and threaten the Bar leadership so that they give up their support to the principled cause and the inalienable right of self-determination,” said the Bar Association in a statement, after holding a general body meeting at the High Court.
Qayoom was summoned on September 6 to New Delhi as a witness in the “terror funding” case, RC-10/2017/NIA/DLI, lodged by the NIA. He was questioned there for two consecutive days and was asked to report back on September 14.
As a mark of protest, the Bar said, lawyers will observe a strike on Friday and “(will) continue the same till the President returns from Delhi”.
“It was also decided that the lawyers would meet again in the morning of 15th of September, 2017, in the High Court Bar room to discuss the issue further,” the statement added.
A team of lawyers is accompanying Qayoom in Delhi.
