SRINAGAR: Journalists on Wednesday held a protest in Srinagar and Pulwama against the arrest of photojournalist Kamran Yousuf, sent earlier in the day to 10-day police custody by a special National Investigation Agency court on charges of stone pelting, PTI reported.Carrying banners featuring pictures of the arrested lensman, journalists assembled Wednesday afternoon at Press Enclave in Srinagar. They posted pictures and wrote slogans such as ‘Free Kamran Yousuf’ and ‘I am Kamran Yousuf’ on the walls. They also held a peaceful protest outside the Pulwama District Commissioner’s office.
The journalists said the investigating agency was deliberately framing Kamran under charges of stone-pelting. “There is no question of his stone-pelting or provoking others to hurl stones at forces,” a Srinagar journalist said. “He was a photojournalist, and it was his profession to reach on the spot. Whether it was stone-pelting or something else, he had to reach and report the same. It is completely illogical that agencies are tagging him as a stone-pelter.”
He said that Kamran, a resident of Pulwama, had worked for around three years with the daily newspaper Greater Kashmir and had contributed for Gulistan TV channel.
