BUDGAM: Residents of the Peth Kawoosa village in Budgam district Saturday blocked the Srinagar-Gulmarg highway to protest water scarcity in their village.
The protestors assembled on the highway, shouting anti-government and anti-department slogans and said that they have to ferry water on carts and bicycles from a water reservoir two kilometers away from their village.
“The worst sufferers are the women and children who have to ferry the water,” a protestor said.
Owais Ahmad, another protestor said that no attention was being paid to developing people-friendly infrastructure in the area. He demanded that the government should quickly resolve the crisis.
“Instead of addressing the issues faced by people, the government is focused on abrogation of Article 35A,” he said.
An official of the department told Kashmir Reader that they are looking for “one time solution” to the problem.
“Their demands will be resolved soon,” he said.
The protest was later called off on the assurances of higher officials.
