Srinagar: An elderly man was assaulted allegedly by two non-local persons near Sher-i-Kashmir Park in Lal Chowk on Tuesday night and robbed off his mobile phone.
Abdul Rashid Bhat, a resident of Singapora area of Baramulla district, was talking on his phone while going to see his relatives at Chinar-Bagh, when he noticed two men sitting on a bench in the park.
“When I disconnected the call one of them stood up and snatched a mobile phone from my hands, I ran after after him and suddenly another person from the back side held me,” Bhat said.
According to Bhat, his assaulters punched, slapped and pulled his beard. “They demanded money from me but when I refused to fulfill their demands they hit me with something on my forehead,” Bhat said adding, “Their intention was to kill me, they left the place along with my mobile phone after seeing blood on my face and clothes.”
Bhat’s family and relatives staged protest in Press-Enclave on Wednesday displaying his blood stained clothes and handkerchief.
Adil Rashid Bhat, the victim’s son, said his injured father somehow managed to reach Chinar-Bagh where his relatives were shocked to see blood oozing out from Bhats’s forehead.
Adil added that relatives took Bhat to police station Kothibagh, wherefrom he taken to hospital by police “after they looked for culprits on incident site”.
Adil said the culprits also abused police officials when police called them on stolen cellphone.
SDPO Kothi Bagh Imran Farooq told Kashmir Reader that police has taken cognisance and filed a case under 61/17.
Imran said that according to the report filed by the victim the culprits are believed to be non-locals. “We have a lead because they have stolen his mobile phone and it’s good for us, we will solve the case,” he said.
