Handwara: A gunfight in the forest area of Hingnikoot Ramhal in Handwara began Tuesday morning between militants and government forces and was still continuing when this report was filed in the evening. An army spokesperson said that a militant has been killed so far but the body has not been retrieved as the firing is still continuing.
Army sources said that on specific information the army’s 6 RR and special operations group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police cordoned off Hingnikoot Ramhal area of Handwara in district Kupwara Tuesday morning. They said that as the forces reached near the suspected area, the militants hidden in the dense forests opened fire. The ensuing gunfight was still continuing in the evening, they said.
The area is remote and there is no civilian movement allowed there. The army is the only source of information, which is why independent sources could not confirm the encounter. However, people living near the area said that firing was continuing even till late hours.
Senior superintendent of police Handwara Gulam Jeelani Wani and Srinagar-based army PRO Colonel Rajash Kalia did not receive phone calls from Kashmir Reader.
