New Delhi cannot intervene in the Supreme Court’s hearing of the case against Article 35A, as the matter is “sub judice”, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has been told in each of the meetings she has held in New Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, and Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Ram Madhav. What is embedded in New Delhi’s stonewalling remarks to Mehbooba is the impotence of the administration and its components- the PDP especially- to do anything about attempts to scrap Article 35 A and thereby change Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. The PDP, it may be recalled, entered into and gave a foot hold to the far right Hindu nationalist party, the BJP in Kashmir and now when the BJP is attempting to alter and change the status of Jammu and Kashmir, the party’s chief is unable to do anything about it except to make a plea ,which has fallen on deaf ears. The whole saga harks back to the proverbial saying of “chickens coming back home to roost”. The PDP’s honchos are on record justifying the alliance with the BJP by stating that the alliance was an attempt to “engage with the new Idea of India”. A major component or even prong of this “new Idea of India” was and as is being witnessed abrogation Article 370 and changing the dynamics of Kashmir- demographic, political, residency and so on-by scrapping Article 35 A. If the said article is indeed scrapped, the deep uncertainties that define Kashmir will, in all likelihood, morph into a protest movement which could have an n number of over and undertones. And, if the current dispensation cannot do anything about preventing abrogation of Article 35 A, it could be held to be facilitating the scrapping of the article by act(s) of omission. The issue or point that the PDP government’s impotence raises is that if she and her party cannot do anything to pre-empt noxious and evil agendas of the BJP, why does not she quit? If she continues in office and if Article 35 A will be scrapped, then through association, Mehbooba and her party will be party to this ungainly and evil action. The PDP’s alliance with the BJP, broadly speaking, has not been good for Kashmir from any angle or perspective. The least that Mehbooba, can do, is to do anything and whatever it takes to prevent and stop BJP’s agendas in Kashmir. If this means quitting the government and thereby the government, so be it. Kashmir’s and Kashmiris’ future is at stake here.
