Shopian encounter ends as slain militants identified, intense clashes erupt

Srinagar: The encounter in Shopian district in south of Kashmir has ended with the death of three militants and two army men while several others were injured.

A police official said that three dead bodies of the slain militants were recovered and were identified as Umar Majid Sheikh, resident of Kathpora Yaripora; Irfan ul Sheikh, resident of Malldaira Shopian and Adil Malik, resident of Malikgund Shopian.

The encounter ensued between the government forces and militants on Saturday evening was the forces suspended the operation around 10:30 pm which resumed Sunday morning.


Reports said that hundreds of people tried to save the militants but forces kept them at bay. However, many were injured during the protests which turned in to clashes as government forces resorted to tear gas shelling and pellet firing.

The slain army men identified as Sepoy Ilayaraja P of Tamil Nadu and Sepoy Gawai Sumedh Waman of Maharashtra. Several other soldiers were injured who were airlifted to army’s 92 base hospital at Badamibagh here.

“The forces are retreating from the encounter site but clashes are going and the men in uniform have resorted to aerial firing to scare away the people,” reports said.

The clashes are going on from Baopora, Chermarg sides, they added.
