SRINAGAR: A government agency has established that drinking water supplied to two Shopian villages is unsafe for human consumption.
Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) has found that drinking water supply at Pinjora and Gagren villages in Shopian contains ‘faecal contamination’.
The tests conducted by IDSP found coliform activity with MPN (Most Probable Number) score of over 24, making it ‘unsafe for human consumption’.
“Water with MPN score above 10 is dangerous, if consumed,” said an official at IDSP Kashmir.
The District Health officials in Shopian had collected three water samples from various sources including tap water and tubewells in the district for testing upon water-borne disease from Pinjora and Gagren Villages.
Chief Medical Officer, Shopian has alerted the PHE officials regarding the reports of contaminated water and asked them to provide the safe drinking water to the affected villages.
The Health advisory has also been issued through IEC of the district asking people to chlorinate the water source and boil water for 20 minutes before consumption.
“The sanitation is also very important to keep the water source clean. Coordination with different stakeholders is must to contain any epidemic,” the advisory said.
