Srinagar: A journalist from Kupwara was thrashed by police in Sopore on Sunday in Watergam area of district Baramulla. Javid Zargar of Handwara was on way to Baramulla when a police party stopped his vehicle near Watergam and thrashed him.
Javid told Kashmir Reader that the policemen thrashed him after they heard he was a journalist.
“They told me that journalists are writing wrong news against police,” Javid said.
Meanwhile chief spokesman of Kupwara Journalist Association Murtaza Mushtaq strongly condemned the incident.
“It is an assault on freedom of press. Journalists report truth. But in conflict truth is the first casualty. Earlier, police and security forces have beaten up journalists as per their will,” the statement of the association said.
Javid is also president of Kupwara journalist association.
The journalists demanded a fair probe into the incident and action from the police against its men who assault and thrashed him.
The KJA also called for pen down strike on Monday and demanded strict action against the erring cops and apology from the police authorities.
