Srinagar: Authorities on Friday allowed the weekly congregational prayers at historic Jamia Masjid, Srinagar after seven weeks.
The Jamia was closed for Friday prayers in the last week of Ramazan, sources said adding since then people were not allowed to enter it on Fridays.
They said that a large number of worshipers thronged the worship place today and offered their prayers though Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who uses to address Friday sermon in the Jamia remained under house arrest however he addressed the worshippers on phone.
“After7 weeks Friday prayers allowed. Heavy deployment on all routes leading to #JamaMasjid to discourage people, I addressed people over phone,” Tweeted Mirwaiz.
Official sources told Kashmir Reader that there were no restrictions anywhere in the old city area and people offered prayers in the Jamia.
