Kulgam: A policeman from the Special Operations Group (SOG) was gunned down by suspected militants in Kanjikullah, Yaripora area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday. The slain policeman has been identified as Gowher Ahmad Tantray, son of Nazir Ahmad, resident of Kujar village in Frisal area of Kulgam district.
The policeman was on his way home when he was intercepted and shot at by militants near Kanjikullah Bridge.
“He was riding a bike and was on his way home from his place of posting in Shopian district, when militants carried out the attack,” a senior police official from the area told Kashmir Reader.
Sources in the area said that the militants fired at least 15 rounds at Tantray, killing him on the spot.
“We have retrieved the body and medico-legal formalities are being carried out,” the police official said.
According to some locals the firing created panic in the area and the fear-stricken locals did not venture towards the body, until the police arrived on the spot.
“He lay there dead for about 15 minutes before the police arrived and picked up the body,” a local source told Kashmir Reader.
Tantray’s body was yet to be handed over to his family when this report was filed.
Following the killing, a large contingent of government forces cordoned off the area and searches were carried out to nab the attackers.
In just over a month, Tantray is the second cop to have been shot dead in Kulgam district.
Earlier, on June 15, a policeman was shot at in similar fashion and killed on the spot by militants in Bogund village of the district.
