Anantnag: Police had to use tear smoke shells on Saturday to quell intense stone throwing at a school in Saalia area of Pahalgam where Minister for Public Works Naeem Akhtar was on a visit.
Akhtar was accompanying Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on a one-day tour of Anantnag district.
The CM took stock of several ongoing developmental projects and inaugurated a school in Saalia area of Pahalgam. As the chief minister left the spot, Akhtar stayed behind and visited another government school in the vicinity.
“He was inside the school when dozens of local youth assembled outside and started pelting stones at the school building,” local sources said.
The sources added that the police had to resort to tear smoke shelling to evacuate the minister as the stone throwing grew relentless with every passing minute.
SSP Anantnag Altaf Khan categorically denied these reports.
“Nothing of this sort happened in the area,” Khan told Kashmir Reader.
Akhtar, however, took to Twitter to write about the incident.
“Visited a school after many months, Salia Pahalgam. Needs some more amenities. Some non student boys outside pelted few stones. No damage,” Akhtar wrote on his Twitter handle, @shangpal.
It is a new Twitter handle with only 416 followers. Its authenticity could not be independently ascertained.
However, this particular tweet from the handle was re-tweeted by the spokesperson and youth leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Waheed-ur-Reham Para.
