SRINAGAR: The entry gate to historic downtown area of Srinagar, Babul Iqbal at Baba Demb is incomplete after missing multiple deadlines.
The project was part of beautification process of downtown parts of Srinagar initiated by the then National Conference government.
The construction of the project of Rs 1.20 crore was started in 2011. The project which is a joint venture of major departments-Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) along with Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA), Tourism and Roads and Building (R&B) department, now craves for attention.
The residents said that the construction material left on the roadside has caused space crunch that often results in traffic jam. “All the construction material has been kept on road and outside the houses of the residents which causes hurdles in our movement.” Naseema, a resident of Baba Demb said.
Residents said that the work is going on at snail’s pace. “The officials do not arrive to inspect the work. The labourers work at their own will, sometimes once in a week,” she said.
The project was constructed with an aim to attract the tourists towards the old parts of city.
Abdul Rashid, another resident said, “The project was supposed to be completed in a year. Authorities have failed to pay attention to the problems faced by downtown area.
Shafqat Khan, commissioner, SMC said “The construction of the gate and its footpath is our concern and we will complete it by the end of November this year.”
