Srinagar: The 60-year-old meat vendor who was hit by a bullet when army soldiers fired at a crowd in Bijbehara town on Monday afternoon, succumbed to his injury at SKIMS hospital in Srinagar on Tuesday.
Mohammad Abdullah Ganai of Hussainpora village in Arwini area of Bijbehara was injured after army soldiers opened fire at a group of civilians who were resisting the beating of a youth. According to locals, army soldiers were beating a youth Mudassir Ahmad Mantoo who had overtaken army vehicles with his motorcycle.
Locals said that army soldiers fired several bullets at civilians in the main Goriwan market of Bijbehara town.
A senior doctor at SKIMS said that the elderly person had received a bullet in his upper thigh and apparently died because of excessive blood loss.
Locals said that Ganai had a meat shop in the main market.
They said Ganai was first taken to the local sub-district hospital where doctors referred him to the Bone and Joints Hospital in Srinagar, as his thigh bone had ruptured due to the impact of the bullet.
Later he was admitted at SKIMS Soura when his condition worsened.
Police have registered an FIR bearing number 101-2017 under Section 307 of the RPC against unidentified army men.
