Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Co-ordination Committee (JKCC) has made it clear to the government that the Committee rejects the GST law outright in its present form and manifestation, and that it will continue with its struggle to not let this legislation be “inflicted” upon the J&K populace. Calling the GST law a fraud, the JKCC asserted that their opposition is not an issue between traders and the government but is a matter of the dignity of the common citizens of the state. “Please be it known to all that at the end of the day, a trader is also a common citizen of the state like any other. No trader is against tax reforms, but no citizen worth his salt would allow the remains of the state’s fiscal autonomy to be consigned to flames, which is what the present dispensation is bent on doing,” averred the Committee.
“A broad programme will be charted out with the advice of experts to launch an aggressive programme/campaign to educate the people as to how this fraudulent law will further erode the autonomy of the state.”
The members of the JKCC further resolved that they would not rest till fiscal autonomy was fully restored. “We are already paying taxes and will continue to pay them for the development of the state but never at the cost of the surrender of fiscal autonomy.”
The JKCC additionally asserted that “in the garb of putting the populace in general into misery and also pursuing the policy of divide and rule, restrictions/curfew are being imposed in certain areas of the city [Srinagar] to paint a picture that the problem is one restricted to these areas. The world knows that every soul is part of whatever is happening over here.”
