SRINAGAR: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmed Khan, has ordered for an enquiry into the illegal cutting of Chinar trees inside the premises of Directorate of School Education.
The order – DivCom/Tree/Misc/50/2017 dated 04-07-2017 – reads, “A complaint along with photographic evidence was filled with the office regarding felling of one green Chinar tree within the premises of Directorate of School Education, Kashmir.”
The order further said that no permission was granted regarding the cutting down of the Chinar tree. “Certain persons have resorted to this activity in defiance of rules and laws which constitutes a criminal activity and offence,” said the order.
The order has called for an enquiry by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar to look into the matter and come up with the report along with the comments from Directorate of School Education within two days.
The chinar was felled to pave way for accommodating more vehicles in the premises of the school education department. A senior official said the department instead of protecting Chinar is plundering and uprooting them.
“What message will it send to students when the education department itself is plundering trees? Are our vehicles more important than trees?” he said.
