Baramulla: A group of villagers and traders staged protest demonstration in Tangmarg demanding compensation for the families of victims of recent Gandola tragedy that killed a tourist family and three local men.
The members of Gulmarg-Tangmarg trader’s association and family members of three persons killed in the tragedy staged protest before the sub-divisional magistrate’s office at Tangmarg on Thursday. The protesters were demanding government job in favour of the next of kin of the persons who lost their lives.
Seven people including three local tourist guides and four tourists of Delhi including two children died after a tree fell on the ropeway in Gandola, snapping the cables and bringing down one of the cable cars from hundreds of feet to the ground.
Protesters appreciated the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti’s announcement to hold high level inquiry to find the causes or lapses responsible for the accident. They also lauded grant of ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh in favour of next of kin of the deceased. However, they said this will not help and rehabilitate the dependents of victims. They said the dependents should recruit immediately in Gondola or any other government department so that the families do not suffer in future.
