These attacks are aimed at demoralizing police: DGP
Srinagar: Police has arrested three more persons in connection to the case of lynching of DySP Mohammad Ayoub Pandith on Saturday.
Police has also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to be headed by the SP north City Srinagar Sajad Shah to accelerate investigations.
Director General of Police (DGP) Shesh Paul Vaid told Kashmir Reader that five youth out of twelve persons identified involved in the killing of police officer have been detained so far. “Others will be also arrested soon,” Vaid said.
He said that investigations were going on and SIT has been formed to expedite the investigations to probe the case.
“Let the investigations proceed to know what exactly had happened there, which led mob to lynch the senior cop,” Vaid said.
Sources said that two arrested out of the five are injured youths who were hit by bullets when slain police officer opened fire.
DGP said that such attacks are aimed at “demoralizing” the police. “The attacks on cops are carried to demoralize police but our moral is high and all the measures will be taken for the security and safety of policemen,” he said.
Police also transferred SP north City, Sajad Khaliq Bhat following the lynching of Pandith and asked him to report the police headquarters.
The additional SP (Traffic City), Srinagar, Sajad Ahmad Shah has been assigned to look after the duties of the SP (North Srinagar).
DySP Pandith was lynched by a mob outside central mosque Jamia Masjid at Nowhatta in Srinagar during the auspicious night of Shab Qadir on Thursday, when thousands of Muslims were offering prayers.
Sources from intelligence department told Kashmir Reader that DySP who was on night duty at Jamia and was offering nimaz when few youth sighted his pistol.
“Suspecting him as an intelligence sources they caught hold of him and dragged him out of the mosque at around 11 pm,” said sources.
The youth also asked him to show the Identity card, as he earlier had also taken pictures with his cell phone inside the mosque premises.
They said that youth started thrashing him outside the mosque and tore his clothes.
“In order to escape, he took his pistol out and fired some rounds resulting injuries to three youth,” sources said.
The firing by the cop angered more mob, who pounced on him and beaten him to death.
“Youth attacked him by stones, lathis and iron rods resulting into his death,” he said.
Mob also dragged the slain cop up to few hundred meters away from the Jamia.
It was early only after few hours a police party came to take over the body.
Police on arrival to the spot fired indiscriminately in the air for few minutes to chase away the youth present around the body.
“Police also fired teargas shells on the youth present there to take over the body,” said an eyewitness.
