BARAMULLA: Hundreds of people at border town Uri of district Baramulla Saturday morning staged a protest against the closure of State Bank of India (SBI) in the town. The protesting people blocked Srinagar-Muzafarabad road for some time at main market and shouted slogans alleging that ahead of Eid-ul-Fiter and even after government directing bank authorities to remain open on Saturday people could not get their own money from the bank.
“There are so many people who are working in Beacon as labourers and in other companies like NHPC, power stations and in Army and they all have their accounts in SBI but they can’t get their money from the bank to buy important commodities for their households due to the closure of the bank”, Sajad Ahmad a local protester said.
“I am a labourer and I have my account in SBI. Eid is coming and I want to buy clothes for my children, but when I visited the bank, I found it locked! What will I do?” Gulam Hassan Khan a labourer of Beacon said.
Sources said that a police team from police station Uri rushed to the spot and assured the protesters that they would forward their complaint to concerned authorities. The protesters later dispersed peacefully.
