Srinagar: The government on Friday announced that Srinagar and Jammu would be developed as smart cities with funds received under the smart city mission launched by the Narendra Modi-led government last year. Srinagar and Jammu were selected among 30 cities to be developed under the mission, out of 45 cities that contested for the smart city slots, Union minister of urban development Venkaiah Naidu was quited as saying by the Press Information Bureau.
JK Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said the smart city status for Srinagar and Jammu will ensure “planned and holistic development of these capital cities so that they are replete with every modern facility of urban living.”
“In the first instance an amount of Rs 500 crore each would be provided to Jammu and Srinagar cities and afterwards an amount of Rs 3500 crore would be provided,” Singh said .
Singh termed the smart city initiative as a game-changer in the development of Jammu and Srinagar cities, saying now their development will take place on modern and scientific basis.
Srinagar Municipal Commissioner Dr Shafkat Khan said that Rs 1000 crore will be spent on various projects to develop old-city areas of Srinagar. “There Shahr-e-Khaas areas will be developed. The Jamia Masjid, Maharaj Gunj, and other historical areas will be upgraded. Besides, urban mobility, disaster management and solid waste management will be introduced and developed. All in all, the smart city is a very good project,” Khan said.
Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), head of Kashmir chapter, Saleem Beg said infrastructure of certain areas of Srinagar will be developed under the smart city project.
“This is a very good intervention to develop Srinagar,” Baig said. “The infrastructure of the city has depleted. It is a developed city with no existing infrastructure, not even footpaths, so it needs to be developed.”
He said that under the smart city project, river beautification will be carried out, civil lines areas will be developed, and cycle tracks will be made, among other works.
