Laylat ul Qadr, translated as the night of power, will be observed across the Muslim world tonight and the morning after. The significance and power of the Laylat ul Qadr lies in the fact that the first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed during this holy and hallowed night to the Holy Prophet. According to Muslim tradition and scholars of Islam, worshipping on Laylat ul Qadra is equal to thousands of days or even months of worship. On this holy night, there is an aura which is said to be accruing from the visit of angels to earth; there is also more power and intensity to worship and prayer(s). Muslims await Laylat ul Qadr with great anticipation and joy and make special prayers on this great and momentous occasion. The value , significance of the Laylat ul Qadr, to repeat, emerges and accrues from the fact that the first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) during this night. Given that the Holy Quran- a standing testimony to Allah Subhaana wa Ta’ala’s tawheed- is the centre of the gravity of Islam , Laylat ul Qadr has significance on as varied domains as religious history, prosaic history, trans dimensional nature of history, religion, Prophet-hood and Prophecy and the Ultimate Reality, to name a few. The holy and hallowed night’s uniqueness and thenceforth power flows from these. Intensely spiritual , on this night, a special connection is sought my Muslims with the Divine and the Holy. A divine and powerful aura permeates this night and Muslims all over come together to worship and pray to Allah Almighty. All this is insofar as the spiritual and even mystical dimension of the Night of Power is concerned. The power of the night is “ felt power” as each Muslim who prays and worships during this night feels this power intensely. But, from a prosaic perspective, key is the percolation of this special feeling on the Night of the Power to our daily and quotidian concerns. That is, the effect of the specialness and the uniqueness of the Night of the power must endure across space and time. It should leave an imprimatur and ingress on our dealings with people, how we comport and relate to each other, how we behave and so on. If the effect of the Night of Power endures and sustains across time, then it would fair to assume that the sincerity of our devotion and worship was on mark. Let us then, on this special Night of Power aspire to attain this sincere state and status of worship and prayer. May Allah accept these. Ameen!
