Kulgam/Srinagar: Two policemen were killed while another cop was injured on Thursday in two separate attacks in Srinagar and Kulgam.
A policeman was shot dead outside his house in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district late Thursday afternoon.
The slain police constable has been identified as Shabir Ahmad Dar, son of Abdul Rehman, resident of Bogund village in Kulgam district.
Dar had served as SPO (special police officer) for a while before being inducted as a constable recently. He was posted in Devsar area of Kulgam and was home on vacations.
A senior police official from Kulgam district confirmed the killing.
“The militants shot at him at about 4:30 Thursday afternoon when he went to take a walk outside his house in Bogund,” the police official said.
He said the militants managed to escape after leaving Shabir in a pool of blood. Villagers rushed him to Kulgam district hospital where he was declared brought dead.
“He succumbed on the way to the hospital to his multiple bullet injuries. He was shot in the neck, face and legs,” Medical Superintendent of the hospital, RD Kasana, told Kashmir Reader. A police spokesperson said a wreath laying ceremony was held in police lines Kulgam. DIG South Kashmir S P Pani along with other officers laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains of the slain cop. The police department had recently asked its men to not visit their homes, particularly in south Kashmir, in view of the threats to their safety.
Several police families have been intimidated by armed militants in different parts of south Kashmir.
On late Thursday evening, militants attacked a police party in Srinagar’s Hyderpora area killing a policeman while injuring another. Kashmir’s Inspector general of police Muneer Khan said one among the two injured policemen has succumbed. “One policeman who received bullet in his abdomen died, while another hit in thigh is under treatment,” he told Kashmir Reader.
