Srinagar: Pro-freedom leadership on Sunday said that police was subjecting civilians to “worst” possible treatment and disregarding their fundamental rights.
In a joint statement issued by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik on Sunday, the leadership criticized authorities for their “heartless approach” against civilian population.
“Police authorities are unnecessarily harassing and intimidating civilians on one pretext or the other,” the statement said.
The leadership ridiculed the statement of IG Police wherein he termed an operation in Lal Chowk as a “mock drill”. Denouncing the crackdown on civilians, the statement said, “This is sheer lawlessness and illustrates the autocratic behaviour of state authorities”.
Terming the IGP’s statement “hilarious,” for justifying the operation as a “patrolling exercise and a leg work” for “lazy” police personnel, the leadership said that the operation, which kept a large population as hostage for hours, was sheer violation of human rights.
“Unnecessary search operation has become routine and order of the day for forces and police personnel,” said the joint statement. “People are subjected to humiliation and forces feel free and unaccountable for their misdeeds. Such uncivilized and heartless tactics are nowhere adopted in civilized societies”.
The leadership pointed out differing versions about the reasons for a cordon & search operation in Lal Chowk. Referring to statement of CRPF spokesman, the leadership said, “It is strange that on one hand police chief says that it was a drill while as the CRPF spokesman said that they had inputs about the presence of militants in area”.
“It testifies our claim that lawlessness rules the roost and state is virtually reeling under martial law,” the leadership said in the statement.
