Srinagar: The army on Wednesday claimed to have killed three militants while foiling an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Machil sector of Kupwara district on Wednesday.
Defence spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia told Kashmir Reader that three militants were killed during a gunfight between a group of infiltrating militants and army along the LoC in Machil sector.
Col Kalia said three weapons were recovered from the possession of the slain militants and the army operation is continuing in the area where more militants are believed to be hidden.
Army sources said that the army saw suspicious movement along the LoC last night. “Taking the advantage of darkness, the infiltrating militants hid in thick jungles,” the sources said.
They said that on Tuesday, the army’s 56 RR launched a combing operation to flush out the hiding militants.
“The area was cordoned off and a search operation was launched in the area where the militants were suspected to be hiding,” the sources said.
“During the search operation, some suspicious movement was noticed by the alert army troops. The militants were challenged, at which they opened indiscriminate fire at the army, triggering a fierce gun battle in the area,” they said.
In the army’s gunfire an unidentified militant was killed. The search for others continued during the day, the army sources said.
“Two more militants were killed by late afternoon,” they said.
The sources said that the army has cordoned off the area as more militants are believed to be hiding there. “The gunfire is still going on,” they said.
Sources said that the army recovered three AK47 rifles, one pistol, 3 Global Positioning Systems and maps, and other war-like stores from the possession of the slain militants.
They said that army would continue the operation till all the militants are “flushed out”.
“Once the gunfight stops, army will launch an operation to sanitise the entire area,” they said.
The army claimed this was the third infiltration bid that they have foiled in the past 15 days.
