Srinagar: Tension prevailed in Pulwama and Shopian districts of south Kashmir on Wednesday after a youth was killed in firing by government forces on Tuesday evening.
A complete shutdown was reported in both the districts. Classes for higher secondary schools and colleges in the two districts were suspended by the district administration.
Adil Farooq Magray, a college student, was hit by a bullet on his chest after forces opened fire to disperse protesters who were trying to disrupt an anti-militant operation in Ganawpora village of Shopian district.
The militants managed to flee the cordoned area and the operation had to be called off by forces.
As the news of the youth’s killing spread, incidents of clashes and stone-pelting were reported from the area.
Some reports suggest that youth took to the streets and hurled stones at the police who responded with tear-smoke shells.
Reports of stone pelting reached from Pulwama, Pampore, Imamsahab, Meemandar, Sofanaman and Awantipora areas.
Locals of Pampore alleged that forces damaged private properties and beat civilians in and around the town. They said that at least 15 persons sustained injuries in force’s actions in the saffron town.
